Mortgaging the Future

I've got to give it to Mike Shanahan. He's so bad at the NFL draft that he decided to simply not worry about picking in the first round until 2015. Is RG3 worth those picks? Nah, only because no rookie quarterback would be. It's a brilliant move by Shanahan though if you assume his goal has never been to win Super Bowls but to simply stay in charge of an NFL team by any means necessary.

Back in the mountain time zone, John Elway is busy offering up guaranteed cash to a 36 year old coming off four neck surgeries without doing any due diligence whatsoever.

Fire John Elway might be coming soon. Check back for details.

Not only has MS mortgaged the future. You didn't mention he was in another salary Cap fiasco that will set him back 34 mil or better. Sound familiar?

I tried to explain the what you warn in you Elway post to Broncos fans. Of course they don't want to hear it.

Trust me. You'll find this interesting.

Now that we have a contract in front of us, I can finally put this Manning / Broncos puzzle together.

Essentially, what we all just saw happen in Denver today was that the Broncos simply wound the clock back to 2011 and gave Peyton Manning his old Indy contract with a healthy cherry of cash on top.

Don't believe it? Check this out...

July 31 2011 headline
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6817822/indianapolis-colts-peyton-manning-signs-five-year-90-million-deal

Manning got his wish.

He re-signed with the Colts on Saturday, inking a five-year deal for $90 million, or $18 million a year -- equal to what New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is making.
--------------------------------------------

All you need to do is change the headline to Broncos got their wish and, remove Colts from the story line and you have the exact same contract.

So, please let's STOP saying it was NOT about the money. As much as Manning is worshiped nobody was going to offer a player who is a possible neck injury away from an early retirement MORE than Tom Brady is making. Manning hit the ceiling with his new OLD deal with the Broncos.

That's not the only thing that is interesting about Peyton Manning. The other thing I find equally interesting is WHY the Colts had to give him up.

I have studied the Colts for quite sometime and I had figured that they were cooking the books. All that came to the light of day when the CBA deal came down on the Colts like a ton of bricks.

One blog sums it up rather nicely.
-------------------------------------------
http://bloguin.com/articles/football/the-purge.html

In an effort to free up cap space for 2013, the Colts jettisoned everything and everyone that wasn't bolted down.

How did it come to this?

The answer is simple: the salary cap stopped going up.

The Colts had been building for years with the expectation that the salary cap would just increase in perpetuity. It had gone up more than 300% since 1994. In 2009, it topped out at $128 million. Then the NFL owners opted out of the CBA. An uncapped 2010 was followed by a dramatic reduction in the salary cap in 2011. The cap was slashed to $120 million and then held steady at $120 million again for 2012. At the time many of the terminated contracts were drawn, it was reasonable to expect a cap north of $140 million. When that cushion evaporated, so the Colts' ability to keep their vets.

The structure and strategy the Colts had used to continue to resign veterans collapsed. Without the money to absorb the $28 million bonus owed Peyton Manning, the Colts were forced to jettison him. With Manning gone, there was simply no logic in delaying the purge. By taking care of all the outstanding contracts at once, the Colts have left the cupboard bare for 2012, but managed to free up massive cap space in 2013.

It's amazing how the RG3 pick put Redskins fans in a coma.

When Shanahan cam to the skins the one thing they did have going for them was a decent defense. It didn't take long for Mike Shanahan to wreck that.

How many DC's will Shanahan go through before the Skins fire Shanahan?
